What is your earliest memory of caring for your skin?
It wasn’t until I studied naturopathy when I learnt how harmful some skincare ingredients were. I was previously washing my (chemical-filled) makeup off with any facewash, just oblivious to the better options out there. I’d say I was 21 when I became mindful about educating myself in this area. I simplified my skincare a lot, and started to only use brands without harmful ingredients. I also started looking after my skin through my diet and other wholistic measures. At the time I had SIBO and other digestive issues, which presented on my skin with acne, eczema and rosacea. It wasn’t until I fully healed from those, that I finally had healthy skin.
What are your non-negotiables for skin and body care?
I study each ingredient list, and if there’s anything in there that I wouldn’t put inside my body, I also don’t put it on my skin. After all, all of our organs (including our skin) are connected!
What activity do you do which makes you feel most like yourself?
I love my work of running Mayde Tea. I am so passionate about herbal medicine that developing new products and sharing them with our community brings me so much joy. Being out in nature, surfing, and walking in the bush are the best ways to come back to myself.
What time of the day do you feel the most energetic and what do you usually do in those moments?
I love the early morning. I’ve always been an early riser and love catching the sunrise. I wake up and boil the kettle, and (if i’m lucky and my kids are asleep!) I take a moment with my Digest tea and the sunrise before the rest of the house wakes.
In the last five years, what new belief, behaviour or habit has most improved your life?
Prioritising time out for myself. Since having kids, I’ve realised how important it is to take time on my own. At least once a week, I take a solo walk in the bush and this makes me feel so grounded, energised and inspired for the rest of the week.
When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, or have lost your focus temporarily, what do you do?
I see this as a sign to slow down, so I take a moment from my desk and get some fresh air. I always find exercise is the best thing for my mental health, so if I prioritise this in my week, as well as a well-balanced diet, I usually feel focused and grounded.
What was the catalyst for your business?
My own health journey. I suffered from both digestive problems and nervous system imbalances for years, and it wasn’t until I visited a naturopath that I was finally on my healing journey. I enrolled in my naturopath degree, and Mayde Tea was unintentionally born when I started playing around with herbal medicine for my own health.
Favourite medicinal herb that anyone can grow in their garden and why?
Chamomile. It is great for people who have digestive problems that are influenced by their nervous system, and vice versa. It makes a delicious tea from the fresh flowers, it is easy to grow and looks absolutely stunning!
Current FENN skincare favourites.
Being located in the Northern Rivers I haven’t been lucky enough to visit for a treatment. However, I am a huge fan of a lot of the beautiful products you use and sell, with the top one being the Activator 7 by Sans[ceuticals]. This product is my winter essential.
